What are the fandoms you read fic for before watching/reading/playing the source material?

And how did you find that fic?

Assasin's Creed, but to be fair I knew a bit about it because my bf played it. I just found it on AO3 with the character tags.

Attack on Titan. I still have not see the source material but have read several fics. They were AU so I don't think I was missing much.

I read several Game of Thrones fics based solely on GIFsets from Tumblr.

Same with AoT. I know the very basics from my dash, but split from canon when Marco was killed and I had the unfortunate attachment to JeanMarco.

So now I'm adrift in strictly AU land.

Back in the 90s, I WROTE fic for a show I hadn't seen (Forever Knight, okay?). It was a crossover with a show I HAD seen (Highlander, dammit), and I'd heard a friend talk about FK, so I was able to extrapolate the fairly thin characterization of the main character without any firsthand data.

It was the most popular thing I ever wrote. It was nearly a decade before the fanmail finally stopped trickling in. People kept saying how blown away they were by how beautifully I'd captured the characters.

I got cynical young.

I have seen FK and I can believe you somehow pulled it off.

Having been a fan of both shows, there's a chance I may have read this at some point!

Possibly. If you remember HL's online fandom, I was the guy.

Many. When I'm feeling tired of the quality of fic in my current fandom, I like to read fic for a popular fandom that I know very little about. That way I have no way of knowing if the fic is OOC or not, and I can just sit back and enjoy that sweet sweet hurt/comfort without having to cringe every few sentences over OOCness. If the fic in the fandom piques my interest, I take a look at the source material. I started reading Homestuck that way.

Outlast for me. I saw some fanart from Whistleblower on Tumblr, and followed my way to fanfic, and then eventually played both games.

Arrow. I have a friend who is a huge Oliver/Felicity shipper and she writes fic for it. I thought her fics were great. She's a good writer and her fics were a nice blend of drama and humor. And her fics had me so intrigued. So I've spent the past few months marathoning the first couple of seasons and I just caught up over the weekend and... It is not at all what I expected.

I expected the Laurel character to be some over the top self righteous jealous woman who whines about everything from the way she wrote her and the way she talked about her and the Oliver/Felicity romance to be some epic romance. Imagine my surprise when Laurel turned out to be the best, most developed character on the show and her ''whining'' turned out to be legitimate depression. I also find both Oliver and Felicity to be extremely unlikeable characters and their '' epic romance'' is barely even a romance.

It's really disappointing because I loved her fics before but now that I know how OOC they are I can't read them.

Sorry for the rant. I had to get that off my chest. She's been asking me what I think since I finished marathoning the show and I have no idea what to tell her.

I actually do like Oliver and Felicity (though I agree that their romance is severely lacking in...romance) but I feel you so hard on your part about Laurel and I agree totally with it. Some of her character arc has been hard to watch, but I think it absolutely makes sense for her character. I didn't think I would like her terribly much at the beginning of the show, but she became one of my favorite characters and some of the scenes with her and her father are the best on the show imo.

*snrk* Sentinel and Due South. I'm STILL highly unlikely to ever watch either of those shows, and never got in deep.

HL, BSG(orig.), The Pros

Highlander - I honestly don't remember how I found the fic.
Battlestar Galactica (1978) - Found a really good author reading fic for another show and pretty much all of her other fic too.
The Professionals - Stumbled onto an archive while looking for something else. Actually never got to watch the show. I don't think it was available at the time I was into the fic (or at least not easily available).

Who???? Who was the good original BSG author??? I would kill to find a good writer I haven't read for that fandom.

SA Btw, have you read Anna O's BSG stories?

Yes, I have, and liked several of them. I've also read BSG fic by James Walkswithwind, Claire, and Luthien.

Many, many, many of them.

Usually either via crossover fic, a favorite author who writes in multiple fandoms, or sometimes a trusted recs list.
