It actually had to! I didn't find this out until the translations went up, but the series was based on nine full-sized books (I figured it was a light novel, like I said below). The ending to the books are totally different. Not quite sure about the manga.

The books also have side-stories, including one set right after the series. I have a lot of emotions about the lack of sequel plans, thanks to that thing.
