That's about as bad as that one artist who would draw Gary/Shigeru from Pokemon looking like he was in his early 20s, but Ash/Satoshi would look 10.

I have NO IDEA why everyone who likes that ship LOVES this artist. I mean, it's a nice style, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they like Ash looking 10 and Gary looking 20.

I don't get the love, either. Ash and Gary are the same age! It seems to be a symptom of trying to force them into seme/uke roles. Fandom's tendency of shoehorning Ash into the role of a frail weeping uke can get pretty irritating.

See, that's what BOTHERS me the most about that pair. ASH ISN'T SOME WEEPY UKE. I mean, this is the kid who jumped in between Mew and Mewtwo's fight and GOT TURNED INTO STONE. This is the kid who fucking jumped off a building to save a pokemon at the beginning of the newest season. This is the kid who was destined to stop the legendary birds with the help of Lugia.

To be honest? Out of the two? I'd peg Gary as more of the "uke" type as he's a lot more down to earth than Ash is and a little less jumps into dangerous situations (unless Umbreon is involved, then all bets are off). But they are both very hotheaded and tend to argue and pick on each other, even when they LIKE eachother.

So... are they the same age? Because yeah, that's a massive size/apparent age difference. I mean there are doujinshi that make a point of de-aging characters to turn them into shotas, but that's apparently not the case here?

Yep. Ash and Gary are rivals/best friends in the anime series and they are both, arguably, age 10. I say arguably because many parts of fandom like to age them with the show AND supposedly Ash was at about age 13 as of the Black and White anime, but I can't remember if the company confirmed that or not. If so, that means Gary is also 13.
