The show had a German cannibal named Gunther (or something similar).
IT techs who set the office on fire because they don't pay attention.
Smokers alluding to Jewish people travelling to Israel when they got barred.
Pretending to be disabled looked like being a dainty flower in a wheelchair.

Um. I'm convinced everything there is supposed to be offensive. Never watched Jen's episode with PMS, did see the shoe one.

um, pretty sure they were making a joke about East Germany, not Jewish people travelling to Israel.

I always just assumed they were referencing to Italian Neorealism* and how that portrayed the bland, depressing and grey life. The style, colours and camera movements are a dead ringer for those films, even the subplot fits. One of the things that made me like the show more than I would have otherwise.

*I am quite sure that is the film style I am thinking of, it's been a while since I took film history.

OP writing about Jewish people - I find those two answers interesting :>, I wonder what's the right answer. I made the connotation because of Poland relocating Jewish folks in 1969.

Not anon who commented but I figured it was a Soviet joke - the bleak landscapes, the increasing restrictions of where people could get luxuries and the clothing they ended up wearing. That sort of thing.
