Well, they're disregarding those people, but that's not necessarily wrong.

I was replying to someone downthread and something occurred to me, and I think it might be worthwhile to say it again and go into more detail. I think part of the problem is thinking that doing something for yourself is inherently selfish, and that doesn't something for other people is inherently selfless. But that's not true at all. There's nothing wrong with doing something for yourself and sometimes you should disregard what other people think. Also, doing things for other people can be done for selfish reasons, like making yourself look good or puffing yourself or even manipulating someone. And it's also possible to focus so much on making other people happy that you wind up making yourself unhealthy.
