The person who used to be my best friend pulled this kind of manipulative shit on me for over a decade. Faked cancer. Faked fights with her family and boyfriend just to get attention. Started imaginary fights with people so is have to listen and tell her how wonderful she was.

So yeah, I think anyone who manipulates people like that is a narcissistic fuck. You aren't funny. You aren't clever. You're just manipulative and sad.

Why would the fact they were strangers mean they wouldn't get hurt?

I think what you mean is "because it's strangers and I can just swan off and won't have to deal with the fallout when someone gets hurt."
