But fanfics are transient. That's the nature of digital media in general - it doesn't have the same permanence that hard copies have. If the author decides to delete their story, or the archive it's on goes down permanently, or there's some sort of server hiccup that wipes a load of data, that's it. It's gone. That's why you should really save a copy of anything you have an emotional attachment to.

(Disposable, however, is snobbish garbage...although to be perfectly honest, your last paragraph comes off in a fairly similar light. Someone's favorite trashy fic can be really comforting, and if you're allowed to be upset if your favorite epic gets deleted, they're allowed to be equally upset if their fic equivalent of a ratty old bad-day sweater gets junked.)

You're absolutely right, I guess I was trying to look more agreeable or something by partially agreeing with the ayrt. I apologize for that. It was insulting and uncalled for, and the ayrt's comment was pure bullshit and didnt deserve even partial agreement.

However, I don't think that fanfic is transient just because the medium is transient, any more than an unpublished manuscript that could be chucked in the trash, or a story passed down orally that could be forgotten, is transient. Many fanfics last decades, since the 60s and 70s, some transferred to the internet from hardcopies that are actually still in print.
