Image: Collage consisting of 5 pictures in 3 vertical rows.
First row: left: Kelli Giddish as US Marshall Annie Frost from the series "Chase"; right: Kelli Giddish as Detective Amanda Rollins from "Law & Order: SVU"
Second row: left: Angie Harmon as Detective Lindsay Boxer from "Women's Murder Club"; right: Angie Harmon as Detective Jane Rizzoli from "Rizzoli & Isles"
Third row: 5 of the clones from "Orphan Black" all played by Tatiana Maslany

Text: I'm way better at telling apart different characters played by the same actor than telling apart different actors playing even just barely similar characters.
And I think it's really embarrassing that I can tell which Tatiana Maslany I'm dealing with from 3 seconds of footage but am utterly confused every time a show has two white guys with short dark hair wearing suits.

I don't think that's uncommon?

(and all teh clones look/sound different anyhow.)

Me too! I have problems with war movies because I can't tell crewcut white dudes in uniforms apart.

No problem with Orphan Black, however, not even when she's playing one clone pretending to be another clone.

Could that be because the production team on Orphan Black have to work hard to make sure that the audience can tell who's who, quickly, in the context of watching a TV show?

Other shows may just assume that the audience mostly isn't faceblind or whatever. A show like OB has to work at differentiation.

That and Tatiana Maslany is that great.

That probably plays a part. I'm pretty sure I have some mildish form of face blindness (not confirmed, but it's pretty common with Autism spectrum disorders, and would explain why I'm terrible at recognising people). I'm generally much more comfortable watching animated characters than live action, but had no trouble at all with the clones in Orphan Black.
