IMAGE: From the 'Roar' music video - a bedraggled Katy Perry looks up in awe as suddenly, she sees the light.

TEXT: In the latter half of 2013, RL decided to mess me up quite a bit. Right at the time everything was plummeting to new depths of awfulness, this song became literally unavoidable. And I hated it, because duh, of course I do, I despise everything Katy Perry is and does.

After a while, it was firmly stuck in my brain even during the silent hours. And after a couple of days of this, I had an epiphany. All of a sudden, this annoying earworm became my inspiration to get up, brush off the dust - I'd had enough. Thus I resolved to get myself together and get my life back to normal.

In practical terms I don't know if this resolution really affected anything; but mentally/emotionally I felt a whole lot better (and life did improve a short while later).

Over a year later, I'm finally ready to admit (though not to anyone who knows me IRL) that I've come to love this song - regardless of whether or not it is objectively any good, or what I think of Katy Perry and her music in general.

...I've also started trying to convince myself that it's well beyond time I grow up and stop being such a judgemental ass over things like musical tastes.

I feel this way about this song and a few others of hers! It took me quite a while to admit how much I dug a song that rhymes "boom" with "moon".

I'm not a big Katy fan but don't mind this song. Plus, we all have some 'questionable' tastes. If you like the music, especially if it gives you inspiration and makes you feel better about yourself, that's nothing to be ashamed of.

(I mostly like this song because of WTNV. It amuses me now.)

Anyway, I'm glad things have picked up for you OP!

I think that's part of growing up, OP. Good on you!

If hearing or remembering this song is associated with a positive feeling of resolve and turning things around for you, OP, then who cares about it being objectively good.

So much of the 'purpose' of music has more to do with how it makes a listener feel than anything quantifiable anyway.

I generally don't like Katy Perry either, but fuck if this song didn't pull me through an awful break-up. Solidarity, OP.

Honestly, this song kind of annoys me even though there are a couple other Katy Perry songs I do like (like Extraterrestrial and Dark Horse). But this is a really cool secret and I'm glad you found something to help you through your bad time.

I hope you do have more of an open mind to music and artists! I honestly like so many things that run the gamut to As Mainstream as it Gets to Totally Obscure, from new to old, and dislike things all along the same spectrum too. It's just not worth hating something for the sake of hating it when you could be missing out on a good song!

As a bisexual woman, I know I should hate "I Kissed a Girl." But... I don't.

If something helps you through a tough time, or it makes you happy, then that reaction is totally valid for you. You shouldn't feel bad because the the song doesn't meet somebody else's (also totally subjective) standard of "good."

I was originally introduced to "Hot and Cold" via The Sims 2 and knew that song in Simlish before I really knew it in English.

I think hating/disliking a certain musical style isn't automatically the same as being judgmental about it. But yeah, I agree that keeping an open mind and not rejecting anything belonging to a certain genre outright is useful when on the search fo new music to listen to.
