I enjoyed it a lot more before I realized she was probably in the early stages of dementia at the time. That can make you think you believe really weird stuff.

(although admittedly she was pretty weird about gay people a long time before that. just not that weird. or better at hiding it.)

Dementia or no, old age is good at making you stop giving a fuck about what other people think about your opinions. I bet she was always that weird about gay people, but was "too polite to say so" when she was younger.

Well, sure, but think about what generation she was from too. Are we just going to declare that all of our grandparents were evil because of their 1940s beliefs? Come on.

I don't know where you're getting "declarations of evil" out of this, but if that's really the kind of thing that your grandparents still believe is true, then, yeah. They're not very good people. Are your grandparents still advocating rounding up all the Japanese-Americans into internment camps? That was also a popular belief in the 40s. There are, in fact, a lot of beliefs from the 40s that people who lived through the 40s have since denounced as fucked up and awful.

*that awkward moment when you defend a position no one has attacked by refuting an argument no one has made*

Yeah, but I work with dementia patients and this is not the kind of stuff they say because of dementia. They tend to either drop the filters and be really emotional, or lose interest in everything. I suspect this is a "drop the filters" kind of thing.

I don't think you can blame dementia. She had what she believed was an actual scientific explanation for why anal sex makes you gay, it wasn't just kneejerk homophobia or blurting out that you hate fags during Thanksgiving dinner. This was also from an interview in the mid 90s and she went on to write a lot more books after that, so it's not like she'd lost her mental faculties.
