Re: Help w/ job pain? (tw for minor tmi/squick/potential body horror)

So, I just got a job working night crew at my local grocery store. Hooray! Money! A job I don't hate!

The one problem is, it's very physically intensive. Some of it I just have to deal with (oh no, exercise), but some of it I was hoping someone could help me with.

A lot of the boxes we get product in aren't taped shut, and are supposed to be pulled apart by hand at the top and bottom (they're essentially glued shut). Some of the openings are small, and require me to essentially wedge my fingernails in there and pry the box open. Doing this once is fine, but over hundreds of boxes a night, it hurts a lot, and one of my fingernails is starting to pull away from my finger.

I'm keeping them as short as I can, which I need to because now they break all the time anyway, but that doesn't help 100%, and I fear it's only going to get worse. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there, like, tape that I could make a little thimble out of or something?

Maybe use a thin screwdriver or something you can use as a wedge. Working with any tool would slow you down at first but people get hella fast at shucking oysters so you'd be able to reclaim your speed with some practice.

I'd have a chat with your manager and ask if they have a pair of pliers or something you can use to pull the corners up, or if they'd be okay with you purchasing a pair for that purpose. Your fingernails won't hold up to repeated stress.

It falls under occupational health and safety, so you should not be in trouble for letting them know - and if they're a good business, they'll do something about it.

If your manager won't give you a screwdriver or plyer or something to wedge under, perhaps consider some gloves to protect your fingernails?

I've linked sailing gloves because they both cover your nails but keep your thumb and pointer finger free for more delicate jobs...
