I'm convinced Shakespeare was a saucy nom de plume (ie he liked to shake his spear).

Secret because it's well documented to be his real name! But I just don't buy it when it's exactly the kind of terrible joke Shakespeare would have loved.

I realise the image is from commedia dell'arte, where slapstick is king, but what on earth are they doing to that cow in the background? Is that a bellows?

I think that's a mule or an ass of some kind, and yeah, I'm pretty sure they're trying to blow air up its ass.

Early Modern Europe fucking owned

Yes, that's right.

Er... okay then. If you're serious about this, then I'm guessing you don't know a whole lot about the origin of names, especially in the British Isles? Otherwise you'd know this isn't such a weirdly "saucy" name that it MUST be a sexual pun.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
meh, Shakespeare was nothing if not clever with words and adored double meanings. I doubt OP is right but if somehow it came out that this was the case, who would really be surprised?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone's disputing the fact that Shakespeare loved double entendre and was good with words. I just don't think it's an automatic jump from that to "so of course his name was also a pun".

The last name "Nutter" is also common in parts of England, it doesn't mean they're crazy or into gathering nuts. Sometimes old names have a meaning that's not obvious to modern readers because we don't know its origin, or because the words meant something completely different a few centuries ago.

i doubt it was that serious

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're right but this is the internet, where people believe a lot of silly things.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well hello there, killjoy.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Just trying to make sure nobody embarrasses the living daylights out of themselves if they ever try to discuss this headcanon with an actual historian or lit professor.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
oh stop. lol

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Stop having fun, kids! Historians and lit professors wouldn't like it!"

You really, really have a deep need to make yourself feel smart and important, don't you?

He probably got drunk at taverns and laughed about his name with his buddies. That's what I'd do.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Shakespeare made constant dick jokes and burned down several theaters with his special effects yes, but his name was uh kinda considered boring for his time.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Someone gets it. I'm not saying Shakespeare couldn't possibly be a dick joke, but just because it sounds unusual to us today doesn't mean there was automatic dick joke assumption in his time.

Some examples of amusing names from the time period please?

I love a good titter.

I know there are lots of hilarious Dutch names, dating from the time they were taken over by a foreign power hundreds of years ago and forced to adopt surnames and decided to have a little fun with it.
