I dropped out of Naruto years ago and I've only been keeping up through fandom hearsay since. I've understood that Sasuke goes back to being a good guy in the end, but would someone be so kind and briefly explain me what he needed saving from and how the hell he was forgiven for all the shit he pulled?

Well, first you need to know that Uchiha love really, really strongly. And when they lose their love, it turns into really, really strong hatred. Zasuke was mindfucked by his older brother, who murdered his entire clan. Turns out Itachi was doing it to protect Konoha and only mindfucked Sasuke because he thought it would keep him away from the wrong path. (It didn't) then Orochimaru stepped in and fucked with Sasuke some more, placing a curse seal on him that amped up his already uberhatred into some over 9000 level hatred.

Then Sasuke bounced around being a stupid evil shit for whatever cause Kishimoto needed him to be a part of for plot purposes. Then he decided he wanted to protect Konoha and the world by becoming the evil Hokage and making everyone in the world hate him, so they'd be too preoccupied hating him to hate each other. Naruto refused to stop telling him he was wrong and eventually won him over with his persistance. Sasuke was then free to apologize to Sakura, who told him like seven chapters earlier that she loved him with all her heart no matter what he had done so far.

They get married/have a daughter and Naruto goes on to marry/father children with HInata. The end.

Uh, well, let's see.

Mostly he needed saving from himself. There was a lot of past trauma, bad influences, possible family curses involved, but ultimately he needed saving from himself.

From an out-of-universe perspective, he was forgiven because practically everyone in Naruto gets forgiven, including people who've pulled worse. (Though many of them conveniently die afterwards.) And I think narratively it was always obvious Sasuke was going to end up a good guy. They never stopped treating him as a protagonist.

From an in-universe perspective, um... he was essential in saving the world and defeating the rabbit-goddess (don't ask). That seems like a reasonable justification for pardoning him, legally speaking. At least since hardly anyone was awake to witness his last swan song of megalomania after that. On a more personal level, I'm not sure he has been forgiven by people other than certain individuals who sank too much emotional energy into the idea of his redemption to change their minds when he finally cooperated.

Yeah, Kishi said Sasuke isn't exactly welcome back into the village, and that's partly why he left on his redemption journey...I guess he only comes back to bang Sakura and see Salad once in a while.

I know this is canon, but the way you phrased it made me laugh.
