(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Is it normal for us to be going through one roll of toilet paper a day?
I feel like this is crazy, and it's my pet peeve when people waste more than they should (c'mon, you don't need more than a few squares unless you're on your period or have diarrhea or something). And I get, you might use toilet paper to wipe something in the bathroom for whatever reason, like a toothpaste spill. I've also noticed that our bathroom toilet is always stuff full of toilet paper, like someone is using it to, idk, dry themselves or wash their face or something.
But one a day? Am I right to be ticked that we go through toilet paper that quickly? Am I being a crazy roommate if I bring it up? Or suggest that if the girlfriend stays, she should maybe contribute money, or our male roommate should pay extra?
I know it's a stupid little thing, but I hate the feeling of unfairness, and that I'm contributing money for something I feel we go through way too quickly. So am I crazy, yes or no?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)I don't think you're being a crazy roommate to bring it up. That stuff is expensive. At the very least I think it'd be okay if you asked around to find out what all the TP left in the bowl is about.
Alternatively, you could always buy your own TP and keep it tucked away with your belongings, only bringing it into the bathroom when you need to use it. That way it's no longer your problem if they burn through the toilet paper too fast.

For me it's not uncommon that I use the bathroom to have a bowel movement upwards of seven times a day. This is a result of medical issues, and I can't help whether or not I have to go. I just do.
So, yeah, my household uses more toilet paper than normal. Nothing to be done about it. I am always the one cleaning the toilet and replacing the paper, and I make sure to explain my condition, so my room mates just have to learn to deal or find another room mate if they're bothered about paying a few dollars more per month than they otherwise might.
Conversely, I did get rid of one room mate who went through four bottles of hand soap in a month (and a whole bottle of dish soap which usually lasts us 3-4 months!) without explanation or reasoning. Or even paying for most of it. Those bottles of soap were mine, damn it.

A couple of years ago, I was living in a house with several roommates and was sharing the downstairs bathroom with 4 other people. The toilet paper ran out so fast and there wasn't a system in place for buying more (I was only moving in for a few months so I had no idea). My friend told me that it was basically a contest of who could hold out the longest without toilet paper because they were all lazy dudes. So I ended up buying a pack and taking a few of the rolls for myself so I'd always have some on hand.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)That said, I can kind of understand your annoyance, my roommate sometimes goes through an entire roll in a day and I seriously have no idea what the hell she does with it, lol. It's not the sort of thing I really feel I can ask though... And we buy very cheap toilet paper, so I've just decided to let it go. Can you maybe buy (or suggest the others buy) a cheaper brand so it isn't eating into your funds as much?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:28 am (UTC)(link)people poop, the average is like 2-3 times a day to 2-3 times a week, and sometimes it's not a clean poop, even if it's not the green apple splatters.

It can be a little hard to measure for sure, though. The thing about TP and bathrooms is that's when we're at our most private/do our most private stuff, so sometimes people don't like to talk about it or what they do with it.
I'd say talk to everyone, ask them roughly how much TP they use, or even what they use it for if they're willing to go into that much detail. Just preface this by explaining that you think the household has been burning through toilet paper much faster than normal, lately, and would like to get to the bottom of this. Talk to everyone individually (as sometimes this stuff is private or embarrassing), but also make sure they know you are talking to EVERYONE individually, so no one feels singled out and you don't come off as trying to start trouble.
If the pieces come together and the girlfriend is, indeed, using up a lot of toilet paper/enough to be noticeable, either call a meeting or talk to them in private, asking that since she's around so much, she contribute a little bit to the household expenses, even if it isn't much. If they seem fairly relaxed/like she'd be willing to chip in (especially since, for TP, it might just be like a dollar or two a week/a few bucks a month), then talk to them in private. If you think they might be stubborn about this, call a friendly meeting or bring this up when everyone happens to be around - that way, you're not just being that one crazy roommate, but there are witnesses/people who can back up the fact that her presence has led to a noticeable increase in how much toilet paper is being used by the household.
If possible, take the cost of just the toilet paper and break it down to five so there's an exact amount to request, as it's a lot easier to request "$2 a week/$10 a month/whatever for the extra toilet paper" than "some extra cash for a household that you don't even live in".
