Well... you could have just sent said friend home in a taxi. You did have options. It wouldn't be the most caring thing you could have done, but it would have gotten the job done.

While that's true, I think it's good that OP did what they did. It is better that they did that, and it makes me think very highly of them.

Aww yeah, me too! I wish I had such an awesome friend... or was such an awesome friend. But maybe I have and I am, just never been in that particular situation.
Whatever. OP, you're the best :D

I'm not saying I disagree that OP did a nice thing, just saying (s)he wasn't strictly obligated to, you know?

yeh.. unless she's hanging around holding her friend's hand or something, that would still have been a pretty nice thing to do.

Eh, not really? I don't know if cabs are cheaper in the US/big cities, but it would have cost between 20-30 bucks to get a taxi to bring her home, which is more than we spent on drinks.

Around here you get a taxi when you're a group and can split the bill. My friend would have just miserably waited until the designated driver was ready to leave (not gonna happen till the light go on) while the rest of us had fun.

I'm just assuming you're all adults here and making your own money. In which case she could have paid to go home by herself. Your friend isn't totally helpless, right?

It's nice to be thoughtful, but still, it could have been done differently. As much as I might like them, I am not my friends' keeper.

A taxi driver tried to rob me once, and I wasn't extremely drunk. i don't trust random strangers. OP did the right thing.
