I saved the Blood Mages who it was obvious had gone to blood magic because there life was so fucking terrible it seemed the only way out.

There were a few, that's true. I probably saved those ones unless they had already turned into abominations because at that point the game doesn't give you a choice.

this is what i turned to after awhile. i started out being pro-mage but really anti-blood magic but a lot of blood mages werent inherently bad people, even if the developers did a pretty poor job of depicting blood mages that werent Immediately Evil. there were some cases where mages were shown resorting to blood magic out of sheer desperation, like that one mage girl in da2 that was cornered and literally about to lose her life before she turned to blood magic (it killed her anyway but at the very least it gave her a chance, which i think is a reasonable response to having your life threatened).

and some mages who practice blood magic aren't even desperate or Evil; merrill for instance practiced blood magic, even nonchalantly, yet seemed to have more self control and realisation than anybody else in the game, blood mage or not. as naive as she was depicted, i really think she knew exactly what she was doing, and thus was able to keep her wits about her in the presence of demons. so i started really sympathising with some of the blood mages unless it was clear they were using blood magic to be unnecessarily malicious, which can occur with any type of magic or weapon, really.

How do you define unnecessarily malicious, out of curiousity? Like, is it sacrificing other people to power their magic, or does using the mind control aspect of blood magic qualify, too?

Asking mostly because the mind control's always been my big sticking point when it comes to sympathizing with blood mages (aside from Merrill, because we know she doesn't use it, to the point where it's not even in her skill tree despite being in the standard Blood Mage tree).

mind control is really tricky i think, there are some times when it can be used for good but on the whole i'd consider it malicious unless someone used it to, say, prevent a terrorist attack or something. kind of flimsy ground
