Re: Your first prompt/meme/other fandom related thing

Thanks!

To clarify, I (hopefully) will be writing a fill. The prompters were pretty lenient in what they were asking for-- i.e. they say they see the prompt more as a comedy, but the filler can do as they please, have any rating, gave a pretty general [okay, somewhat specific] plot. I only hope the prompter will be pleased with the story!

But yeah, I guess it's expected to fill the prompt the way the prompter wants it to be? It sounds silly, but I'm not sure how it works.

Hmm, this is kind of sticky. The most I can say is that it's expected not to be a douche about a prompt. Meaning, if someone specifically states they don't want something, then don't do that.

But, you filling a prompt is kind of a gift to the prompter. They can say what they would like or not like but you're under no obligation to fill it that way. I believe the original prompt memes were just a bunch of bunnies people didn't have time to write and were there for others to play with. They weren't there to be filled for someone but to give inspiration to others in need of a plot to write. It's changed a bit since then, so I think there's argument about what is and isn't expected. That's why I think the minimum is not to be a douche about warnings and do-not-wants.

There are a couple of things you can do if you're not sure you're filling the prompt the way the prompter wants.
1) Ask them. Put an outline or summary out there and say these are the things you're going to do and ask for their opinion or for more specifics about their squicks. (And if they are squicked by your kink, don't feel like you can't write the fic -- just don't post it to the meme.)

One of the minor issues we recently had was that a prompter wasn't clear with what she wanted. She asked for "dirty, filthy talk" and that's what the filler gave her, but it actually wasn't what the prompter had wanted. The filler cannot be held accountable for that. The filler of this felt awful about it but no one, not even the prompter, felt it was her fault. The prompter realized she should've been clearer. But, the prompter was also squicked by something else in the fill. She never said anything about that, so the filler wasn't in the wrong about that either. The only thing the filler might've done was warn a little louder about what was in the fic. It was clearly a lesson in communication. You can always ask the prompter for more information, but if they don't answer, you interpret the prompt as you see fit.

2) If the prompter prompts something that interests me but I feel like I want to go in a direction that I think might not be totally what they were going for, I'll write the prompt fill in my own journal and make a RTYI post. That way it doesn't look like the prompt has been filled, so the prompter could still get the prompt filled to her specifications. But it also allows the prompter the chance to read the fic in case it's something they would enjoy too.

So long as you did your best to honor the prompt, then you've done it right. If a prompter says they want certain things changed or gives you grief for not doing something the prompt didn't say, then that prompter is a douche and don't take it to heart (I have never really seen this though. Most prompters on my meme are very respectful.).

My basic advice is to make sure you are enjoying yourself. It's not a contract. The prompter is getting a gift they should not expect to receive, so there's no reason they should be upset unless you've purposefully ignored their warnings.
