the thing about nico, to me, is that i thought he ended up being infinitely more interesting than the stories being told and the characters on the forefront, to the point of distraction. and i suspect it was all an accident.
riordan didn’t really give the character much thought. he used di angelo as a convenient plot mover whenever and then put him aside to go on telling the adventures of plucky percy & annabeth up until the very last book of hoo.
but what this whole process of bringing him out to expose convenient info then putting him aside did was give nico di angelo a life outside of the confines of camps and prophecies, a life outside authorial intent. a particularly lonely, tragic life, especially considering how young nico was when he chose exile over camp half-blood, but it allowed him a degree of freedom and self-government that no other of the main characters have.
how did he come to learn so many secrets? how has he been able to survive at all? we were told it was damn near impossible for demigod children to survive on theri own and the kid was shadowtravelling through the world and going on trips tartarus by himself. this mere idea, to me, was so much cooler than the adventures of the prophecy kids, charming as some of them were.
