Actually the writer of DA2 said that Anders canonically has bipolar disorder (wich is also implied in his in-game codex, where it says that Anders has always suffered from "violent moodswings between deep melancholy and manic determination") and that his storyline with mage opression and justice was meant as a metaphor for mental illness.

Which makes a lot more sense when it comes to mages; people who are locked up because they have the potential to be dangerous, who are locked away for 'everyone's good' and given lobotomies and solitary confiment as punishment for non-compliance.

Anders being mentally ill does not represent the entirety of the mages. And the other mages in the games do not have bi-polar disorder... I think mage = mental illness is a major reach. Interesting interpretation but I don't think it really works, to say magic is just mental illness.

It's not my opinion, it's the writers. This is a qoute about this specifically;

"As the writer of Anders, and many other aspects of DAII, I found this an interesting and thoughtful examination of what we tried to do with the game. I do find it odd, though, that Anders is not discussed in regards to the treatment of the mentally ill. For me, that is primarily what his relationship is about — the difficulties of loving and trying to help someone who struggles with a part of himself that he cannot control and may never be able to control. It is certainly the experience I drew from when writing him, and I think it uses the fantasy setting in the way I most prefer to see — providing a magical metaphor for exploring real-world problems. To me, this is the central feature of his character — not whether he is gay or straight, but the inner demons (personified as Justice/Vengeance), which both he and you, as his lover, must struggle against every day."
