Fandom Expert

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandom do you feel you are an expert in?

How much of an expert are you? Read all the supplemental material? Seen all the episodes? Talked with the creators themselves? Memorized the book?

If you're close to being an expert, what more do you have to learn and are you on your way?

MCU. Supernatural up to Season 8. The Walking Dead TV show (and some comics). Mostly consuming all the media, reading meta, and being all up in the fandom.

Star Wars prequels (just the films though)

Tolkien. I haven't read all of HoME but I've read a lot of it, and a bunch of scholarly external stuff too.

I don't know Elvish yet but I know what I don't know, if that makes sense, and I hope to learn it someday.

I don't think there's any fandom out there where I can't think of quite a few people who know massively more than I do.

However that might be in part because I tend to gravitate towards fandoms that spend a lot of time on meta and theorizing and all of those things.

I don't feel like I'm an expert in any of my fandoms, tbh. I'm probably most passionate about Tolkien, but I look at people like Stephen Colbert and go, “Teach me master, I am unworthy.”

I used to feel like a SPN expert (for the first two, three seasons) but it's been a while since I've watched the show or had anything to do with the fandom so the details are sketchy; it doesn't fit anymore. (Once upon a time I could look at a screencap and tell which episode it was from, or if someone asked which episode a certain quote or scene came from I could tell them.)

Certain aspects of the Harry Potter fandom, though mostly the non-LJ stuff and the three year summer. A lot of people seem to have no idea there even was a fandom beyond LJ, Ao3 and tumblr. Which is sad to me because I think some of the best stuff happened off LJ. (And some of the worst, but I digress.)

A lot of older games, most definitely -- Doom and other id Software titles, Thief and System Shock, Fallout. I've also studied Marathon and its terminals quite a bit!

Harry Potter, I have memorised the books. I can't stand the fandom as a result through. I never looked into it before the books ended so all fics that disregard canon just annoy me.

O no the ending wasn't good enough Harry had to dramatically eat his friends to improve that. I just can't.

I have assembled an impressive assortment of canon factoids for any number of fandoms. Then I get annoyed when people get them wrong in fics.

haha, LazyTown. I have only watched around a dozen episodes but the premise is so simple that as long as you check out the original Icelandic play and read up on the actors, you're all set. I feel like I know as much as anyone in the fandom. A small fandom, which also helps.

Only fandoms with a limited enough source material that it's easy to learn it all. I always want to learn All The Things but I don't have time because I multifandom...a lot. I can't ever just limit myself to one medium at a time, so I never fully absorb anything in any of them. (I do like to keep resources on hand though so I know where to look stuff up!)

Star Wars. I know most things about the OT, Prequels, and EU. Not completely about the comics, though I do know the best known ones. I've talked to some of the EU authors at conventions as well and gotten into discussions with a couple of them online.

Current Formula 1, I know pretty much all I need to know. I am a bit iffy on some of the technical details tho.

But in the fandom, fandom category: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (I've seen everything, read a lot of books about the show, and read quite a lot of random theories, meta and such), Angel and Firefly is a close second in that knowledge also Harry Potter. All of this is "old" knowledge so I've probably forgotten a lot of it, I used to be able to identify quotes and recite parts of the episodes or books in Harry Potters case. To the degree that my cousin and I used to read the first line on the top of the page in Philosopher's Stone and the other could say the second.

Also I watch a lot of television shows, and I do re-watch a lot of it, so I know a lot about the show, but not so much of the other stuff in fandom. Which would make me an "expert" outside of fandom circles, but not in.

I wouldn't say expert, because it's impossible for me to know every tiny thing, but I'm pretty good with Marvel Comics, MCU and WoW(maaaaybe Tolkien as well but I've got some fanon mixed in my canon apparently so probably only about 70% knowledgeable with that).

I used to be a master of several smaller ones (like Psychonauts and Pokemon!). My fanfics and blog posts were well-researched and elaborate. There were TV shows that I could recite whole episodes of entirely by memory, down to the sound effects, and I could name every single Pokemon pretty much in order.

Then some traumatic stuff happened in life, and to make a long story short now I have trouble memorizing even simple instructions and numbers, let alone huge fandom stuff.

Shit sucks. :(

Stargate Atlantis. I feel that I'm an expert both in the TV series and the fandom. I've never read the tie-ins, though. They're glorified fanfiction.

Expert at the "I can (probably) name the episode by title from a screen cap" level for Buffy and Star Trek: TOS.

Relatively knowledgeable about DS9, Warcraft/WoW, Saint Seiya, Crimson Spell, Gankutsuou, and myth and fairy tales in general.
