*sratches head* I must have an unusual reception on this, since I get roughly the same feedback on original and fanwork.

I mean, sure I get more 'likes' or 'kudos' or quickfast comments on fanfic, but the original stuff seems to get fewer, more substantial responses. Maybe it's just me.

I know you sell comics but do you publish prose too? How do you make any of that work? I mean with promotion and how you make it available and everything? I'm just curious about different methods of being professional at this sort of thing in one way or another.

(I'm sorry, anon who asked me to cool it! Someone asked me a direct question! Forgive me!)

I do writing, comics, and art, and I tend to go through cycles with each. Some years are writing years; some are comics years. It makes it easier for me to prevent burnout if I can switch mediums. And all of this is pretty small, in the scheme of things; I've been using my current set-up for about two years, and my huge excitement this year was that I made enough in art income to pay for all my groceries with it. That sounds like little, but apparently 90% of authors don't break the $1000 a year mark, so go me!

My writing is all self-published right now. (Though I hope to change that.) I run it all via LJ/DW; I post a theme every month or so (this month's was 'fear,' for instance) and people prompt me according to the theme. I talk about it in more detail here, and if you want the whole rules and rundown, I explain it at every writeathon, such as here. I'll also write custom stories on commission, but people don't seem as into that.

As for promotion, I'm active online and I mention it a lot. (I've already been asked to cool it by an anon here, so am going to try and tone it down; I don't want to be a pain.) I've been active online under the same names/accounts for almost eight years, and I was posting stories for free for like, five of them. So people already had an idea of my skill level.

It also helps that we have some minor fame as That Multi on the Internet. As it is, I try to be interesting and amiable, and if people DO want to give me money, I try to make it as easy as possible.

Was there anything specifically you wanted to know?

Not the person who asked you to cool it, but I can see where they're coming from.

You're speaking to a logged in user -- if you truly wanted to cool it, you could have PM'd them. Instead you're taking yet another opportunity to remind us of the services you provide.

You are running the risk of crossing over from informative to obnoxious, and even if I might have once considered commissioning you, your endless use of F!S as self-promotion has completely turned me off.

I'm sorry. IN the future, I'll PM named users.

A third different anon and I just wanted to say don't sweat it too much, it's not a huge deal or anything, more like... just a minor faux pas, or a slight violation of board etiquette, from a generally really good poster.

(Someone else butting in)

Or have a post on your journal and link to that if anyone asks a question again?

I was also interested in how your commissioning system works, and went to your journal but couldn't quite understand it, especially since I've not come across this thing before.

Repeatedly talking about it on f_s is however not the way to go. It's explicitly against the comm rules, except in the promotions thread, and will annoy users. You've certainly put me off and I suspect several more.

Perhaps have a FAQ on your journal, and break the information down more simply?

Thanks for answering. Personally I'm glad you answered here instead of in PM because I tend to think I'm not the only one with a question at times like these. More information in public means other people who are interested can read while those who don't care can just ignore it. But I guess I forget how little self-promotion it takes to annoy some people.

You'd be hard pressed to find a day's post go by without LB Lee mentioning somewhere about their commissions. If there's a thread even vaguely connected to fanworks or creativity, you can bet their commissions get a mention.

That's hardly "a little" and F!S is not a community set up for self promotion in the first place. Plenty of places are, but to come into a forum that doesn't cater to that (and if you notice, Case's own advertisements thread specifically says not to advertise for-profit things) and basically spam every chance you get is hardly going to get a warm welcome.

I just don't see a problem with them mentioning it when it's relevant. Why shouldn't it come up in a thread about creativity when it's where their creativity is directed and it affects their response to the thread? I might be in the minority on this though. That's okay.

If you think someone is breaking the rules, you might have more success if you go directly to Case instead of airing your concerns in GC.
