In what context is it a compliment to call a man a dog? It's typically meant to indicate that he's somehow morally reprehensible.

"Yo Dog, I hear you got our flight booked. High five!"

da

that's usually "dawg" which is different. a lot of guys get called "dogs" when they're being rude or inconsiderate towards women, although occasionally they'll get called a "lucky dog." Like bitch, dog is a flexible word used in a lot of contexts

In that case you're not calling him a dog, you're calling him dawg.

DA, but I've seen "you dog" used as a sly way to voice approval of a man's sexual exploits. - "You slept with Ann AND Mary on the same day without either one finding out? You dog!"

But dog also gets used in the exact opposite way, to say a man is no better than an animal or that he's a jerk.

In the same way, bitch is sometimes used as a compliment. "Yeah, I lot that asshole in his place." "*grin* You bitch! Way to go!"
