I tHink this is a very accurate reading of Hotch, and it's unsurprising that not long after that time, they started having troubles. The question then becomes hour much of that was evident early on in their pre-series relationship? Obviously we can't know that, but I honk Closing the work to a calling gives some leeway to imagine ot NOT being something evident until Hotch had his BAU experiences.
