(Tara Lipinski, figure skater)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Tara is a bit giddy but honestly Weir's commentary irks me more because he's so biased about his favorites and pretty dismissive of Asian skaters (minus Hanyu).

They should bring in Tonya Harding. I bet she'd be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Last I checked, she was co-hosting? narrating? idk, one of those "World's Dumbest" shows.

I can get past the '98 results (although I still think Michelle deserved it) because Tara actually has decent, informed commentary. But I was pretty disgusted at the utter failure of both of them to address the ludicrous results of the ladies competition in Sochi. Michelle vs. Tara--at least in '98 Tara skated cleanly and had a modicum of artistry. And her artistry component hadn't jumped by 50%, or whatever ridiculous margin it was, from her previous high. I was appalled at Johnny and Tara's complacency regarding Sotnikova's win--it was just disgusting. Disgusting. Especially since everyone in the skate world was talking about it. I don't blame Sotnikova but she didn't deserve it--she was outskated and outclassed by both Kim and Kostner. And Weir, because he has such a hard-on for anything Russian, didn't address it. That's not being a journalist, that's being a cheerleader.

"That's not being a journalist, that's being a cheerleader."

He's there to wear sparkly clothes and be flamboyant, not do anything useful. Your expectations need some adjustment, I'm afraid.

You are undoubtedly correct, sadly :/

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly yes. Figure skating commentary is notoriously vapid and pointless. It's marginally better (usually) if it's an actual skater, but sometimes, eh, not even then.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exaggerate much? I think Sotnikova did more than enough to win. Technically she was best and artistry is highly subjective. I think her score was inflated, her margin of win shouldn't be that much, but she deserved to be first. I found Yuna rather disappointing. She seemed tentative and her tech content was low, compared to Sotnikova. Caro was lovely but her program was empty. There was a lot of posing and the setup for the jumps was loooong. I love both Yuna and Caro, but on the night I think Sotnikova was better.

The one thing I resent about the scoring is that Mao didn't win the FS. I guess that happened because she skated so early, but I think it was unfair.

"Artistry is highly subjective"--I can safely say that waving bye-bye to the audience and playing tug of war is not artistic. Sotnikova's artistry was nil. Ugh. I was honestly disgusted at that result. Oh my God, and the hug she got from the judge immediately afterward--gross. Very interesting that she has hardly appeared since then, considering the pressure she is under to prove she deserved to win. One thing about Tara over Michelle I have to appreciate, is that it proved if you have an uncorrupt panel, that the favorite can be upset--if both skate cleanly.

Mao DEFINITELY, no questions whatsoever, should've won the free skate. THAT was technically the best program. Just more evidence that the Russians were determined to prop up Sotnikova.

At least I can get behind the Russian skaters this year. Obviously I'm not a fan of Sotnikova, and I never really liked Lipnitskaya--I thought she was very juniorish with the heart on the ice and the Little Girl motif. (Then again, I thought that about Tara as well, and obviously the dirndl dress and snowball playing choreography didn't hurt her.) I love Radionova and Pogorilaya--I'm assuming they're both going to Worlds and hope they do well there.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
We'll have to agree to disagree, I guess. Sotnikova suffered an injury that required surgery. I'm hoping she comes back strong next season. TBH, she's never been one of my favourite skaters to watch, I'm rather indifferent to her, I just think she deserved the gold.

I love all the Russians this year, but my favourite is Liza Tuktamysheva. It's good to see a skater come back strong. I'm hoping she includes a 3 axel in her SP at Worlds. She seems to land it rather consistently in practice. It will be good to have a woman who does 3 axels, now that Mao is semi-retired.

Oh shit, seriously? I had no idea she does a 3A, that's awesome! (Oh my God, I started crying when Mao landed hers in the free skate--what sweet, sweet vindication.) Yeah, I watched Tuk at Euros and she's a gorgeous skater, no question. Very, very solid (in a good way, that's not a veiled slam). Solid as in you just know she's going to deliver. At least that's what I got but I don't know that much about her, I'm just starting to get to know the new Russians.

Poor Yulia, though--9th at Russian nationals??? The media should've just left her alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
She tried it in competition for the first time last week at the Bavarian open. She fell, but it was fully rotated, so it actually scored more than a 2 axel. These videos are from the practice session at the Bavarian open:

3 axel - 2 toe combo! http://instagram.com/p/zIxER_IWJj/

She makes it look so effortless!

I'm really sad for Yulia. The pressure combined with the problems she had with her boots caused her to meltdown. :(
I hope she returns stronger next year. I don't particularly like her skating, at the moment, but I love her attitude.

I couldn't open the first link but the second...that's--that's incredible. Like, that's state of the art shit. I've never even *heard* of a 3A in combination--that is AWESOME!!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Try this: http://instagram.com/p/zIwjkfIWIm/
She does a textbook jump, not a hint of under-rotation.

She was actually landing 3 axels (in practice) since she was 13 and she apparently was doing 3 axels-3 toes, as well. But then the puberty monster hit and she had a couple of rough seasons. A lot of people wrote her off, but she came back better than ever. I give props to Mishin for her excellent technique and the way he supported her when she was in a slump. I think that has a lot to do with her confidence now.

da, but I loved reading the discussion between you two!

Lipinski had artistry in Nagano? I don't really consider just leaping about and smiling to be artistry.

Not addressing Sotnikova was ridiculous. Although, I don't agree that Kostner outskated her, Kim certainly did (and Asada outskated all of them and should have won the LP). I think they're both pretty poor commentators. I found it odd that American media didn't address it much. They've never been shy about casting the Russian athletes as the 'bad guys', even when it's totally unwarranted (i.e. the Russian gymnasts in London, Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze in Salt Lake City), so their acceptance of it was just strange. This isn't to say that Sotnikova SHOULD have been villainized, as of course she shouldn't have been. She no doubt had nothing to do with the results. But I'm surprised it didn't happen.

My least favorite thing that Lipinski actually did was go on and on about how artistry wasn't what we were here for in regards to Yulia. I've no doubt the comments about her lack of presentation were striking a chord with Tara, being that she was once upon a time (deservedly) receiving the same criticism.

I kind of like them together, even when they're doing schtick on Triple Crown races.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the both of them, tbh.

Text: I am so not thrilled about seeing her back on TV as a sports commentator and it’s entirely because I’m still bitter about her ’98 win over Michelle Kwan. But I’m cool with Johnny Weir doing it.

(Yes, I know it’s petty, that’s why it’s a secret.)

I'll never be over it either, Anon. It was the first time a sporting event really devastated me like that.

I've no doubt the media would have been all over debating the results that year had the winner not been a cute, white, American girl. Tara fit the girl next door mold better, simple as that. But it's so telling that despite them constantly promoting her that year, it was Michelle that came away from the Olympics as by far the most popular skater.

I think both Weir and Lipinski are bad commentators, but yeah, even if they weren't... I also just don't like seeing Tara. It doesn't help that it really shows how short her senior career was when she talks about her experiences, because damn she only has like three things to discuss.

I was so mad when Tara Lipinski beat Michelle Kwan way back when.

I don't like Johnny Weir because of what he said about Russia and the gay propaganda law stuff though...
