It's kind of impossible to not know about football when you're required to attend every single game in high school and every single home game + bowl games in college...
...although I had a friend who took three years to realize that after the ball travels 10 yards, the offensive team gets a first down.

And I feel you on the college band directors being dicks. My first two years of college marching band, our director was awesome. Quite possible THE best band director I've had in my life. And then there was internal drama re: adminstration and whatnot (still know mostly rumors vs actual deets), and he transferred to a different college.
He got replaced with a total hardass who single-handedly demolished most of our existing band traditions for being frivolous "shit." Ughhhh, I even slightly defended him to my friends the first year, reasoning that maybe he was just being a hardass the first year because he was still working into it, nervous to do a good job, etc. However the second year was even WORSE.
A decent number of students quit, and as one of the oldest members of the band at that point, I warned him that if he kept alienating existing members and fucking with traditions, then a whole lot more would quit the next year. I told him this in tears after he'd just killed another warm up tradition that we'd been doing for AT LEAST the past SEVEN YEARS based on what I'd heard from previous older members.
His response? The people who didn't want to be there, didn't have to be there.
I ended up a super senior, 4.5 years at college, but I didn't do marching band my final semester. I'd had enough. And apparently my prophecy came true. In just two years, the average band size dropped from 300 members to 200 members. HE CHASED OFF A THIRD OF THE BAND.
Apparently that was also his final year as the band director. Got replaced with another faculty member the year after I left.

*makes joke about trumpets being cocky and self-important* :P
Man, that sucks balls. I hate it when a bad teacher/director/etc. ruins what used to be a really good thing. :(

Trumpet is cool! I always wanted to learn to play an instrument but I was (And still am) also lazy, didn't like my classmates and didn't really want to spend that much time with them. However, I imagine band can be a wonderful experience and think it's cool you stuck with it for so long. I'm sure you bond pretty fast and learn a massive amount of discipline.
Also, learn about football. I can imagine a couple places it might come in handy.
