I need romance help (for Dragon Age) and some more

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-02-18 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
And preferably with not too many spoilers.

So, playing DA:O and DA2 I sort of instinctively went for certain characters, and turns out my type is apparently bisexual elves, so there's that...

But I'm playing inquisition and, none of the characters are really clicking for me, so I'm hoping you guys can give suggestions.

I'm playing female human, so I think my options are Blackwall, Cullen, Iron Bull, and Sera (who is not yet in my party). None of them is really super my type, so I need to go a bit by personality.

My fav romance I did was Zevran (though I dmit not doing them all). I also enjoyed Alistair and Fenris. I thought I'd enjoy Anders, but aborted the romance as he became more of a zealot (not a fan there).

So, who should I date, FS?

Cullen is probably closest to my type, though I'm NOT a fan of templars in general.
Blackwall seems sort of bland so far, and I'm not a beard gal.
Iron bull seems fun in banter so far, but that's about it.

Eh...so I dunno.

Also, I sort of have to decide now whether to side with Fiona and the mages, or the templars. Institutionally I'd say mages, but really I feel the're both assholes in this.
Suggestions?

I ended up liking Cullen's romance. He's not a templar or mage-hating anymore, by the way. Blackwall is drama, Bull is BDSM + sweet, Sera is fun and young but she's really, really not everyone's cup.

About the mages and templars - whatever mission you choose, keep in mind it's not an automatic siding with them. I like the mage mission better but YMMV. You get to meet Dorian sooner that way and he has great dialogue, but you meet Cole in the templar path and he's cool.

Thanks, that's actually quite useful - also about the missions!

From that description, I'd probably go for Cullen or Iron Bull - how prominent in the BDSM thing in the latter romance?

Oh, good, I wasn't sure how much spoilery would be too much.

Well, the D/s thing is the biggest deal, I think. He's a dom and he tells you to quit it if you suggest switching it up. He also says it's what *you* need, not him, and he's fine switching it up with others so personally I don't like it. But that's a personal squick. There's discussion about safe words and banter about orgasm delay and bondage. He's a pretty cool character though. Oh, and his romance changes a little in tone in the end depending on what you do in his personal quest.

Ah, thanks, I'll see what I do with that. I'm fine with kink, generally, but I'm not that subby.

Oh damn, I forgot Josephine. Like anon below said, she's sweet - her romance is like a Disney fairy tale, as her writer put it.

Josephine is an option for you as well. She's sweet and has an Antivan accent so that might appeal to your little Zevranmancer heart.

I'd go with Fiona and the mages for your first PT just because the quest you do when you side with them is so good.

Thank you! Didn't realize Josephine was an option, too!

Josie was my favorite romance for a fem inquisitor, because she's darling and has the cutest voice. If you're into more intense things it might not be your cuppa, bc it's more innocent and doesn't have any sex. I found it refreshing because unlike a lot of other romances, there's no lies or drama, none of the ~ooh i can't be with you~ type thing, just cute fairytale stuff. Also she lifts up one leg when you kiss her and that's fantastic.
Haven't seen Cullen's but from what I hear it's super-sweet, and yeah he's way more mellowed out about templar stuff compared to past games.

And yeah, for the mages vs templars thing it doesn't make a huge difference tbh, but the quest for the mages was p cool! On the other hand if you do templars you get Cole sooner and he's a dear.

Josie and Cullen are probably the safest romance options in the game (Dorian and Cass, too, for M!PCs).

Blackwall's personal quest will leave you either loving or hating him. Bull's personal quest has a binary choice that completely changes the direction of his character, and he's very kinky. A lot of people hate Sera, and she's probably a teenager (according to her dialogue about the blight), but she's sweet if you're kind to her.

As for Mages vs. Templars, imo it depends on how you play the game. If you visit Redcliffe before choosing, mages makes much more sense (you're presented with some kind of imminent crisis in Redcliffe so it's a little weird to blow that off to seek out the Templars). In Hushed Whispers has a few plot holes, but it's badass and sets up the Big Bad a bit better. The later sideplot also works well if you're romancing Cullen, because it heavily involves him.

On the other hand, if you skip visiting Redcliffe and immediately choose after Val Royeaux, the Templars make more sense because there's clearly something wrong with the Lord Seeker. Champions of the Just is nearly as badass as In Hushed Whispers. A later main quest is much easier if you side with the templars, and their later sideplot is much better at fleshing out the Big Bad's followers.

You still get both Dorian and Cole, no matter which you choose. You get Dorian first if you go mages, Cole first if you go Templars. Also remember that you aren't really choosing a side in the mage/templar war by choosing a faction. You can support or destabilize either side on both quests.

Make sure you recruit Blackwall, Bull, Viv, and Sera before you pick a faction!

I'm going to go against the crowd and say that for a first playthrough, going with the templars is probably a better option. Both the templar and the mage quests are pretty good on their own, but the knock-on effects of recruiting the templars make for a much more interesting path through the rest of the game - the Big Bad's lieutenant differs depending on which route you pick, and the one on the templar path is a lot more compelling, and the quest chain she's involved in is kind of a neat magical mystery/spy thriller thing, while the quest chain for the mage path is kind of grindy and mostly involves killing even more of the dudes you're going to be killing a million of anyway.

Like other people have said, which path you choose doesn't actually decide the stance you're taking on the mage-templar war. You can sort of take a side on the issue at the end of the quest and can elaborate on your choice in dialogue with a few of your allies, but your main purpose is to bring one or the other group in line to deal with the Breach, not decide who's right.
