Well it is a fair question, under old Hollywood rules as he was Venetian (Italian) Marco Polo ought to be portrayed by a dirty white and not look like a real white. There are certainly enough Greek actors or Red Indian actors for the role.

This is why I enjoy the casting. He's a northern Italian figure played by a northern Italian actor.

That is just insane, under the Hollywood race casting. Greeks play all Italians, except Sicilians who should be played by Turks, and North Italians play either French or Clean Spanish. Southern Italian actors should do television comedy or variety shows. Irish, of course, get to play Low-Irish. Civilized Irish get played by either Scots or English. Jews always play Jews or Nazis.
