But they said they don't care what the creator's excuse is, which suggests it doesn't matter how many gay characters there are. I get that your interpretation is probably what they meant, but it still isn't what they said.

You're being a pedant. The situation you're offering is completely hypothetical; the OP is very clearly saying this in the terms of current mainstream media offerings.

No, you're right, they didn't. But, again, when there are barely any shows that have many gay characters (those that bother to have any to start with), it hardly feels necessary. I mean, it kinda feels like a given.
