When all else fails, go with the color scheme of black, red and white. It's eye catching and pleasing.

Go with clean type. No swirls. No fancy lettering. Yes, most times it's boring but unless you know what you are doing, just go with simple. (Avoid Curlz at all cost. Just don't.) If you want do mix fonts, stay within similar themes. Don't use Comic Sans and mix it up with Old English. Don't use more than three different fonts at a time. This is a secret and not a random note.

Unless the background pic is a uniform color, don't write on the actual picture, itself (You've seen secrets where the OP had to switch from dark text to light text in order to make the secret visible. Don't do that.) Instead, make bars on top or on the bottom to write your secret. Either black bg with white texts or white bg with black texts. Again, keep the font simple.
