But would it have been so hard to say they'll quit if the only gay character, or one of a handful of gay characters, is killed off?

Why are you assuming that's what the OP meant in the first place? (Plenty of people have commented saying that's what they'd do in OP's place, but OP hasn't said that.) I think it's very possible that OP--after having seen this trope played out again and again in less balanced works--is in fact tired of seeing gay characters killed off at all, regardless of whatever ameliorating conditions might surround their deaths.
