I feel like periods are so rarely mentioned in media to begin with (barring the occasional: "you're so cranky is it your time of the month?" question to a female character). Any mention of debilitating periods doesn't seem likely anytime soon, though it would be interesting to see it brought up, like you said.

I had a roommate whose cramps got so bad she could barely stand up. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
