You can, but of course I'll draw a blank on names immediately! I think the big difference between many of the Canadian artists and the trend I've noticed in the American scene is that the American artists have abandoned the story songs (and a lesser extent the familial love themes) in favour of "sexier" ideas- patriotism and the "drink and get the hot chick" themes are rife. Not that the Canadian scene is completely immune (that awful "Hold My Beer" is by a Canadian artist, for example), but Canadian content laws have allowed artists not fitting the American model to still have some commercial success.

I'll try to come back later, but off the very top of my head:

George Canyon (although as a parent I can't listen to his song My Name), Paul Brandt, George Fox (my mother would probably string me up if I forgot him; he's her biggest celebrity crush), Terri Clark.

And because I did complain about the American patriotism, there's been at least one Canadian version called The Red and White. It was less hideously redneck than Toby Keith however, and the proceeds actually went back to a charity that helped veterans.

Country enough to get played on the country stations but aren't country-country: Blue Rodeo (I adore them beyond all reason), Loreena McKennit, Great Big Sea. Alan Doyle of GBS fame has just released a solo album I want to check out; his song Take Us Home has been in heavy rotation around here since it was used in the finale of a Canadian show called Republic of Doyle. Heather Dale is also similar, though perhaps too far along the Celtic influence to be country.
