I don't think I'm being defensive (I know you're making a general statement, I'm just saying) and I'm not trying to convince anyone to feel differently

I'm just real uncomfortable with the idea of saying "This kind of story is acceptable, this kind of story is not". Basically the OP's position as presented seems way too broad to make any sense to me. And, I mean, it doesn't need to make sense to me, but equally, I don't think it's wrong for me to say that it doesn't make sense to me? I guess? IDK

They're not saying that it should be unacceptable to everyone, though. They're saying that it's a dealbreaker for them, personally. I can say something like "ugh, I hate reality TV. I never watch it" without people leaping on me to screech "WHY DO YOU WANT TO TAKE MY KARDASHIANS AWAY?" I don't see why the OP is being treated differently.

You don't have to understand, of course, but I think it's really odd that you are feeling uncomfortable about it, especially since it's OP's comfort level that's the point of the secret, not yours. It feels kinda invasive for someone to say someone else's media preferences make them uncomfortable. (Unless they were being creepy about them or something but that does not apply here.)

I don't think the OP turning off is the same thing as saying it's unacceptable at all.
