Miura has been drawing Berserk for almost 20 years now. I won't disagree that the early volumes had some terrible art. But goddamn if it isn't one of the most superbly-drawn comics out there now.

I say that the melodrama lifts after the Retribution arc, too. It's not sunshine and rainbows, but it's not all despair, either.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I couldn't help but think that the person only considers the art "ugly" because not every character is super amazingly beautiful. I mean seriously, the art is fucking gorgeous.

Berserk doesn't have to be everybody's cup of tea, but yeah...the quality of the art is not the issue here.

Well, then what artists do you think are good? Personally speaking, a lot of popular artists' work hurts my eyes *cough*CLAMP*cough* but I love sketchy and simple stuff like Erica Sakurazawa - so I know my tastes really aren't representative of the norm.

I find a lot of manga art really painfully similar, but Miura's style stands out - he has a more realistic take on facial features that I find really refreshing. And I've never, ever seen better expressions of blinding rage. When Guts goes psycho, Miura has him go psycho. :P
