Because I'm not part of the fandom, and I didn't know this was a popular opinion.

And if I may ask, why did you prefer the second arc? It wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy as much as I did the first. You seem to have the opposite view, so I'm curious as to why.

The first arc was mostly about the cat and mouse game between L and Light. At first, this was amazing to watch, but as time drug on, I started to want something more. Sure, there were issues with Misa and Rem, and the whole Yotsuba thing added a lot more stuff to the mix, but at its core, the first arc was always about the balance between L and Light.

The second arc, on the other hand, was driven by the overarcing story. We had three really interesting new characters to absorb - Mikami, Mello, and Near. There was the tension between Mello and Near, between Near and the new L, between the Japanese task force and Mello, between Aizawa and Light... there was so much going on. People were thrown into chaos, brought close to victory and equally close to destruction, and the sheer scope of the battle grew by leaps and bounds. When I read the second arc, I thought, "This is what L's work has brought us to. Every battle before this was building to this point. THIS is the end of the war."

As much as I love L, and believe me, I really really do, Light started with such an advantage that the way the battle between them ended seemed inevitable. But L couldn't let himself be defeated that easily - all his commentary about Light becoming the second L had to have a reason. He set it up so that even if he was defeated, Light would stay in the spotlight, and the battle against Kira could roll forward. Seeing his legacy working, all the pieces finally falling into place, for me was just perfect.

Sorry for the wall of text. Death Note gets me worked up. :)

No problem about the wall of text, it was what I wanted. The few friends I have who read Death Note share my views, so I wanted to see the opposite side.

I think the problem is that what I really enjoyed about the first arc was the cat and mouse game. It didn't seem to drag on for me, because it was a tight plot, whereas I thought the second part had too many variables that continued on. I mean, yea, Mello and Near had some great moments, I enjoyed Mikami's role, and really enjoyed Kira's downfall. But despite that, I thought the one-on-one conflict was more engaging than all of the second arc's minor conflicts. I didn't like how wide-spread the second part was compared to the tight man-vs-man.

But I will admit that when I read the second arc, I entered it thinking "Without L, this isn't going to be that good". But seeing as you raised some good points, next time I read it, I'll keep an open mind and think about what you said.

So yes. Thank you bearing with me, it was an enlightening conversation. If nothing else, given other's comments on my secret, now you know that you're not alone in preferring the second arc.
