You're not alone. I love the successors more than L, especially Near, and even though the parts with Takada were boring, the final meeting made up for it greatly.

Hand to God, Near made the series for me. I can't believe what an unpopular character he seems to be in the fandom - you're presented with this pretty, angelic looking little boy, you make all these assumptions, and then he opens his mouth and he's got a snarky streak a mile wide! All of his banter with Light makes me giggle with glee, he's so hilariously mouthy. And the casual way he'll just be like "Gevanni, this is essentially a suicide mission. But you're down with that, right? If you're scared, I can send Rester." Gaaaaaah, I adore him.

Ahem. Sorry. It's just so rare that I find someone I can gush about Near with ;D

Well, I love L AND Near (and pretty much for reasons stated by you XD ).

And I'm not afarid to admit that hate Mello. Well, maybe I don't hate him, but his looks sort of freak me out. Of couse he is important to the story, and everyone from Wammy's seems to be "not quite normal", but I still dislike Mello.

I also dislike Light, but that does not prevent me from acknowledging him as a very interesting and well-written character. (Oooh, I was really curious whenever he's gonna lose in the end and damn, that was satifying seeing him going ga-ga! XD )

L absolutely owned me while he was there, don't get me wrong - I fell for his character as hard as the next fangirl - but then Near came along and I was completely swept away. It was like all the best things about L, only snarky and blonde. Two of my greatest weaknesses.

AND! I sincerely did not think I would ever find someone else who dislikes Mello. I like him as one half of Mello/Near - their dynamic is so fascinating and ugly and doomed and everything I look for in a pairing - but the character itself totally grated until I got the history and saw them together.

Exactly! Mello/Near dynamic is wonderfull, just like you said.

As for L, as much as the fangirl in me wished that he didn't die, the story appreciator in me is very glad about it, because it gives much more weight to the character himself and definetly to Near (and Mello).

I also like how Near is slightly dissing L. XD

Oh man, Near's relationship with L is so beautifully complex. The way he immediately lashes out against him after his death, then finally admits to his admiration later, even looking at the case as though they're actually solving it together - I mean, it's such a gorgeous portrait of what these kids must've gone through, forced into this situation where their ultimate goal is to become someone that actually exists, someone tangible, rather than just an idea of how to be. It's pretty fucked up, if you think too long and hard about it.

And I agree, the story necessitated that L die at that point... but that doesn't mean that I don't cry like a little girl every time I watch 'Silence' or read that chapter of the manga :B

I loved the successors and their arcs.

And I loved Mikami as a character, that crazy motherfucker.

And I liked Light as a character well enough, but I'm glad he lost in the end.

Well, seriously. As much as I love dystopia, this particular story would've been a collosal waste of time if he won in the end. He was fun (oh, evil psychotic red-eyed laugh of doom, I love you so), but he had to go.
