I'm the complete opposite. I have no idea why but I am upset by Pluto not being a planet to a weird degree. I'm in denial. You ask me to list the planets and Pluto is still there.

Lord, it still annoys me. The reasoning was so ridiculous! The IAU basically said "ehhhhh there's a lot of bodies around Pluto's size out there, but more planets would be too confusing, so let's make up a rule specifically to exclude Pluto and these other guys!" And there was almost none of the voting body there because it was at the end of the session, and everyone there rejected a second vote because they wanted to get lunch. Fuck you guys. >:I

We always had it as My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas. Makes far more sense that way. Why would such an educated woman waste perfectly good pizza?!

huh, ours was Served Us but otherwise the same! and during the times when Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune, it was Pistachio Nuts rather than Nine Pizzas.

tbh I just never felt Pluto fit with the others (because it doesn't), so I'm pretty happy with its current classification, yeah. o/\o

I must be weird. I do not use a mnemonic for the planets, nor for Linnaean classification. I just remember where they are relative to each other. It's like knowing where the rooms in your house are, or the alphabet.

I actually got 'taught' a lot of mnemonics and handy word tricks in school. With the exception of PEMDAS and BAGS (beauty, age, goodness, size: french adjective categories that come before the word iirc), I found them all much more confusing than just remembering the thing the mnemonic was supposed to help me remember.

I learned the colors of the rainbow in preschool for whatever reason (probably so I could draw rainbows on all the things), and was very confused when they kept trying to teach us to use Roy G. Biv in elementary school. Why is some weird dude's name supposed to be easier to remember?

Actually, it's harder now for me to remember the mnemonic for the planets than the planets themselves, probably because I heard too many versions. Sat Upon? Served Us? Pizzas? Pillows? Pancakes?

Text: Frankly, I’m glad that Pluto got demoted from planet status. When I was in middle schoo, our science teacher had us make our own mnemonics to memorize scientific groups of stuff: kingdom/phylum/etc, planet order, metric abbreviations, you name it.

I already knew my planets from Sailor Moon, but I made up a thing all the same. What I came up with was:

Moria’s Very Evil Monster Just Shortened Us Nine… Nine.. Persons? People?

GODDAMMIT, PLUTO! YOU JUST HAD TO SCREW UP MY MNEMONIC C=GROOVE, DIDN’T YOU ?!?!

tangent: taxonomic classification levels

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-02-19 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
In my high school zoology class, my teacher wrote down the following mnemonic for remembering the order of taxonomic levels of classification:

King Phillip Came Over For Good Soup

Then she erased "soup" on the board and wrote "sex". To a class full of 16- and 17-year olds, it was hilarious. And it worked - it stuck in my head and I still remember it to this day!

(Anyone else have any mnemonic for taxonomic classification? Now I'm curious :3)

The one we got was King Phillip Clearly Ordered Fried Green Spinach. I like the sex one better though. :)
