It actually comes from World of Warcraft. There's two factions in the game, with different 'languages.' When a member of one faction says something in their language, the game runs a filter on it to translate it into pseudo-gibberish when the other faction sees it. And when a Horde player types 'lol,' it translates to 'kek' for Alliance players.

Useless trivia, but kind of interesting.
