I don't think he is. He was introduced pretty early,and the show as still going strong then. I don't even think he's a self-insert, he was written as the "perfect boyfriend" for Kurt - if anything, that's the self-insert.

He was supposed to be Kurt's mentor, and Kurt's boyfriend was going to be a football player. But Darren was so popular they made him the boyfriend the instead.

And Rachel is more of a self-insert than Kurt is, but that always gets overlooked because Murphy's a gay guy and Rachel's a girl.

God, this. I did manage it (though I don't actually have anything to say since I still liked him when I stopped watching, but that was seasons ago; you probably have a point) but...maybe go with a different color combo next time.

Also, despite being gay comment meant that they treat almost other gay character like they're diseased or incapable of normal human behaviour.

He could have been great, a truly inspiring character with actual flaws and development. Instead they *cough*RyanMurphy*cough* made him flat and boring and changed GLEE from 'The Rachel Berry Show' into 'The Rachel Berry and Blaine Anderson Show (Now With Extra Romantic Drama!)' "

The show had other problems unrelated to Blaine, although he doesn't help.

If anything, I thought he read as the real self-insert's (ie Kurt's) fairytale unicorn boyfriend, and that was why he was blandly perfect. But then I stopped watching some time ago.

As someone else has already said, the biggest problem with the show was bad writing. I was just easiest to see with Blaine and how perfect he is, despite the terrible things he did.
