Misinformation is most attractive and spreads most easily when it reinforces cliches that already exist. In this case, that Japan is full of sexually depravity and weird animation. It's a common belief.

So it's not surprising you believed it, especially since a lot would be lost in translation even if you were reading the manga.

I had heard much the same about Sailor Moon, and also Robotech* when I was a kid, not that they were outright porn but that the edits made to them were much more severe then than they were and there was more nudity, and outright sex than there turned out to be (Basically how it was described I thought they were like animated HBO shows, in terms of content).

I also remember a local TV christian program getting hysterical over Sailor Moon, citing the fact that adult men complained when it was aired out of order, and the very fact that adults were watching it made it suspect. I can only wonder where those people are now, and what they make of My Little Pony.

*In the case of Robotech it probably came from one of Macross' sequels Macross Plus, as well as the middle show Southern Cross having quite a few full nude shots of it's protagonist, but that's as raunchy as any of my childhood shows got in Japan.

Text: When I was about 9 years old, I went online looking for Sailor Moon stuff and found a couple of really explicit gifs of Ami getting tentacle raped.

The site they were on said that Sailor Moon was originally a hentail show in japan and that 4kids had managed to edit down into a G-rated version that they then showed to American kids.

Despite actively reading the manga, I somehow believed that site for almost TEN YEARS.

I remember this exact rumor making the rounds when Sailor Moon was first airing in English. I think I sort of believed it too ... at very least, I didn't not believe it. On the plus side, it was the first anime I watched that people generally knew was from Japan.
