When I wake up in the morning, after I wash my hands, I pick the sleep out of my eyes with my fingernails. I assumed everyone did that, but my mother found out and thinks it's disgusting.

Huh. I've always done that. Have to, actually, at certain times of the year (yay hay fever). I know it can be done with a washrag instead, but still.. my nails are right there, and they're much more effective.
