I felt really creepy when I first got interested in RPF for a certain show. :-) But there was a rather "hidden" area for it, not splashed on the internet, and I felt safer engaging in that place. No way was anybody going to run across it by accident!

I have found, though, that RPF can more easily become original fiction with some changes, because it's so little connected to fandom anyway and usually has fewer readers.
