I think they should've aimed for an NC-17 rating, too. Their gimmick is that it's erotica and it doesn't take much to land an NC-17 rating anyway.

Call me a rosy optimist, but I was honestly hoping that 50 Shades would be the thing to bring the NC-17 rating back into the mainstream. It would've been so cool. But alas, it was not to be.
