Gideon's character always struck me as being brilliant, but rather unfeeling when it comes to interacting with people. He knows how to manipulate them, but not how to really deal with them in terms of a healthy colleague/friend/protege relationship, and that was really obvious when it came to Reid. Hotch was the one who had that deep empathy and human touch, and I was glad he became head of the team after Gideon left.

Though I don't think there was much danger of Patinkin coming back, not with the bad blood surrounding his abrupt and unannounced departure. That really left the show in the lurch.
