I'm not sure how it would be excusing a fictional character (unless you mean about the relatives themselves) when the joke is entirely about how he does remind most players of these people in real life. They love them, but it's a very serious personal issue in most cases. People deal with it differently. Although a lot of people seem to have no problem making Vivienne every bad encounter they had in real life by comparison, but eh, not secret-related.

You also can't change Solas very much within the game, though. A possible romance doesn't really alter his core character. He changed an entire civilization because he assumed it would make everything better, and that was just pre-game. It makes for a lot of interesting meta discussion, but if meta always comes off as excusing the character's actions (see: how most Anders conversations seem to go), it might be better to go somewhere else.

I only commented because I saw a thread a day ago using the term, myself!
