Anyone who can't differentiate between intellectual property and pixels shouldn't be allowed on the internet.
Think it over, would you?

Of course. I'll spend the rest of my afternoon debating how wrong and unworthy of the internet I am because of tiny squares I produce that are completely intangible and worthless. Then I'll delete my community right after I cry moar.

It's about respecting the artists who give you so much joy when you make icons.

Surely you can see the hypocrisy in not asking anyone to modify or claim credit for your icons.

What if the fanartists didn't want their work modified?

If I could credit every piece of fanart I used, I'd love to and I would. I, in all honesty, don't think it's that big of a deal. I could very easily just not icon fanart, but I like to, and it's not a big deal, so I'm going to keep on doing it.

Thanks for your input, maybe you should take the internet a little less seriously.

Translation: I'm too lazy to find the original artists.

The internet is not exempt from the rules that apply in real life. A little research, and I'm sure you could find most of the artists.

3 and 10 from PW on your most recent icon post are by tokiya (http://nt.sakura.ne.jp/~tokiya/) for a start.

I guess so. Guilty as charged.
Like I state all over my community, I get my sources from 4chan.

But thanks, I'll add credit right away.

I don't see anything wrong with getting the pictures from 4chan at all, and I don't see anything wrong with not knowing the artists, but still using the art..

But you could always ask who the artists are in the post. ^^ If someone sees and knows who the art is by, they'll be able to tell you there. It's not as hard as searching, and you'll at least be looking to credit the original artist.

That way, to me, seems like everyone gets the benefit--you get to still make icons of fanart, people still get to enjoy your icons and feel smart when they know the original artist, and, the fanartists themselves may get a few hits and new fans thanks to your icons.

That is exactly what I do. And when someone posts credit, I post it immediately.

For example (http://community.livejournal.com/bubblemilk/2352.html)...? It works out nicely.

Ah. ;3 Then you're already good!

I have no problem with you. XD

If that's what you do you were still really hostile in the initial response to the secret. No wonder they don't understand it and argue with you if that's the tone you use.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhhh, no, the artwork is still the intellectual property of the artist, even if the character designs etc aren't.

The hours of practise, the tools, the style... all of that makes the work individual to the artist and as such should be respected.

The difference between fanart sites and this icon maker is that they usually indicate the series they are paying homage to.

An icon maker cannot say they are paying homage to an artist if they don't link to somewhere the artist can be found.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, using someone's art and not crediting it--whether it's fanart or not--is more akin to taking someone's fan fiction and putting your name on it, or using big chunks of the text they've written in your own fic. Fan fiction or not, that's still plagiarism.

Just because "it's the internet" doesn't mean you suddenly have a free pass to be an unethical douche.

"Using someone else's art to make icons or something is more like quoting a fanfic on you LJ profile."

No, it's not. It's like taking chunks of that fic and inserting it into your own fic--which is plagiarism. It's like posting parts of someone's fic and not attributing it to the author, so that when people see it, they can assume you've written it.

It's not a big deal if you credit the original artist. But if you're taking someone's art, making icons of it and then asking for credit for your icons? That, especially, is hypocritical and worthy of a good punch in the face. Metaphorically speaking.

Glad another anon agrees with me. :D Seriously, what's with all these young ones nowadays? It must be the "I want moar" generation.

"Some icon makers believe that crediting allows others to see where they got the icon from."

Yes, exactly. If you use fanart, crediting the artist allows those who are interested to find out who did the original--the same way crediting an icon allows people to find the original icon maker.
