The artist, who takes out time to make images for you to enjoy.

The legacy of 4-chan is truly disgusting if that's your attitude.

The artist shouldn't care so much. I know plenty of fanartists, myself included, who are flattered when their work is used for an icon. Why can't people just take it as meaning someone liked their art enough to want to have an icon of it, rather than kicking up a huge fuss because someone didn't link back to their deviantart page or whatever?

Seriously, that's all it is. People missing out on some hits on their website. People not being able to take the idea that someone might admire their pictures without admiring them as a person too. As far as I'm concerned, seeing which artists get pissy about this sort of thing tells you which artists are only posting fanart for the attention.
