While that is a good point, in a sense it's like, because most people know the studio/artist/animator/etc, they don't need to be credited as much as someone who posts on Deviantart? And what if there is a popular fanartist? Like in the Escaflowne fandom, there is one Japanese fanartist who's work is recognized widely (most of the time anyways), does her artwork still need to be credited because everyone knows who she is?

And the thing about fanart being personal, I can understand that if say a friend created a personal artwork for you but someone else used it for icons. But when fanart is showcased, especially on the internet with such a large audience, I think a lot of the personal aspect is lessened. Especially when now a lot of fanartists are selling their work, the line seems to be blurred.

No, it's fine. I don't mean to debuke you, this whole issue has just been bothering me and I'm trying to understand it all. :/

The implication is that this official artist/studio/animator/etc is the 'default'--if you post an icon made from a Gurren Lagann screencap, you don't need to say 'the art in this icon is from Gainax's animation department, made so that it can be used to promote the show in whatever way possible,' because everyone already knows just by virtue of what the icon is. On the other hand, if it's Japanese Fanartist #432, not only does the fandom at large not know who made it, but you don't really know what their purpose in making it was.

I also see your example and I think it depends--there are some popular fanartists who are known to be against the use of their fanart in icons, and I think that's their privilege, but there are others who are known to be fine with it. I think people should at least try to find out which kind of artist they're dealing with before they start iconing away.

I do tend to figure that when I've bought a doujinshi, I can make icons out of scans if I please (and this is generally the only time I personally feel comfortable using fanart icons). For me, the dividing line is in fact whether an artist sells their art or not. I can't exactly voice why I feel this is when it becomes okay to icon (especially not in my current virus-fogged state), but it's a fairly clear line for me. Maybe it's because, when they start to accept money for their art, they acknowledge that it's not just for their and their friends' personal benefit anymore. I don't know.

Well, I think if a fanartist posts their work online or some other venue, I think the purpose is to share with the community on a whole (and maybe get recognized for their efforts, but this isn't always the case). Because if you think about it, if they just wanted to create it for themselves or friends, why post it on a public website or forum? True, sometimes art is leaked that wasn't intended to be, but most of the time fanart is on 4chan because one time or another the fanartist uploaded it to showcase.

Does this mean it belongs to them any less? No, of course not. But a thing to consider is that again, these are icons (and other graphics sometimes as well) that are being discussed. They are products that aren't commercially being used, so once again it boils down to a courtesy thing. Showcasing a fanart as your own and using it make icons isn't the same thing I believe, though I do believe it is a little hypocritical when iconmakers INSIST for credit and will hunt you down if you don't do so.

I do the same thing (making icons from doujinshi I mean), and I agree with the line if an artist sells their art or not. Though sometimes I do make icons from fanart, but those are usually are personal and I'm not strict about credit if I do offer for others to use.

Exactly, this whole issue always seems so confusing to me. :c

I agree that posting a work on the internet acknowledges that it's not just for you--but is that the same as acknowledging "it's okay to create a transformative work using my art"? Should it be? I tend to think that it's not, but it doesn't really bother me if people make personal icons based on fanart, even if I'm happier when it's with permission. I do start to get bothered when people make icons of fanart and then share it for other people to use as well without asking for permission/checking for credit first. But it is a confusing issue.
