25. Agreed. I'm so fucking sick of this too, and even more sick of all the lamers out there who actively mock the artists (and the non-artists who support them) for feeling this way. It's bullshit. And it drives me up the wall that it's asses like these who gets Japanese fanartists to shut down their websites or block foreign IPs. It's utterly unacceptable, but at the same time there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done about it >_<

not!secret02. He gets older as the series goes along, you know! ;D

*shrugh* I think it wouldn't hurt to spend like... less than 10 minutes, push the mail button (usually the site have this button right?), and ask them in simple English asking for permission. Usually they will say OK though.

I hate the people who mock this kind of secret with fanart icons / mocking expressions too. So ~considerate~ of them srsly.

*nods* No kidding! Or, y'know, actually paying attention to the little disclaimer that a lot of fanart sites put up -- which are usually in English! -- that kindly asks people to not use their art.

It's one thing to not agree, and another to sit there and mock it in such a manner. That's just plain childish, to say the least.

(BTW, love your icon! Elizabeth ♡)

It drives me up the wall that artists get so worked up about something that ought to just not matter that they shut down their websites :| I don't get how it's doing them enough harm that they need to do something so melodramatic.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No offense meant, but maybe you need to realize that not everyone shares your opinion. What you deem "melodramatic" is, to some artists (like for example the doujinshika who closed down her site because she got a bunch of asses making fun of her -- saying shit like "I hope we make you cry" -- when she politely emailed someone who had scanned and put her books online), the only way they can protect their work.

Everyone has different opinions, and just because you'd be okay with someone taking credit for your hard work doesn't mean others will. I really don't see why respecting other people's wishes has become this idea that is nowadays worthy of mockery and/or just plain lack of understanding.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I do absolutely think that people should respect artists' wishes. I think it's rude to use stuff without their permission, especially when they state in no uncertain terms that they do not want it used. I think people ought to avoid using artists' work for things when they don't know if the artist is good with it, unless they're willing to find out if the artist will let them. I think that if people like an artist enough to use their work for something, they should respect them enough to treat the art according to the artist's wishes, and I think that the people advocating making Rauhreif cry behaved absolutely despicably.

That doesn't mean I don't think that this prevalent attitude among fanartists that their work needs to be 'protected' from redistribution is silly. I know not everyone is as laid-back about this sort of thing as me, but do they have to be so very high-strung about it?

Leaving the whole issue of doujinshi being scanned and posted online to one side, because that's an issue more complicated than just the use of fanart with which no money or hard copies are involved – letting more people see their work doesn't do a fanartist any harm whether it's credited or not, and this obsession with being credited and alerted to it or asked permission seems to me to be kind of illogical when all they're losing out on every time someone fails to link back to their site is a handful of pageviews.

And yeah, if someone asks me if they can use my work for an icon, that's nice to know that they wanted to, and the nice thing to do is to tell the artist because chances are they will permit it if you actually say to them, and they'll be flattered – well, I also really like hearing that someone liked something I drew enough to save it to their hard drive so they could look at it again. But I don't think anyone's obliged to tell me, let alone ask permission, every time they do that – even though it makes me smile when they do.

I can understand that someone would be somewhat bothered by not getting the attention and absolute control over the distribution of their art that they'd prefer. It just bothers me firstly that this controlling, attention-hungry attitude is so prevalent, and secondly that as a result people routinely make it into such a big deal when it really doesn't need to be.
