Jesus Christ on a crutch@all the comments re: my secret. So, here's a news flash:

I did not go into the movie expecting the stage version. I went in expecting a movie that was based on a musical. I got that. I went in expecting the actors to make me believe they were the characters they were portraying.

And thus is where my disappointment lies.

Yes, Burton works well with Johnny and Helena, but enough already. Johnny is capable of singing. He just didn't seem assed to do it, though. Same with Helena... although I guess if you're the director's domestic partner you can get away with a lot. But they both can do better, and they didn't. I couldn't even enjoy Alan Rickman, whom I fucking adore, because the leads should set the tone and they just didn't.

Johnny, to me, sounded like Jack Sparrow, and with the over-goth look Burton used, he looked a hell of a lot like Edward. So, yeah, disappointed in a good bit but still did enjoy it for what it was: $4 and the price of popcorn for a morning viewing, and no plans to pick it up when it hits DVD.

I mean, fuck it all, people, this is F_S, not Wank-On-The-Posters comm. You can go to JournelFen and get that on Fandom_Wank if you like though....

Specifically: "'I was talking to people and they were saying, Well, of course you're going to get a singing teacher,'' he says. ''And I said, 'Oh, yeah-yeah! Of course I will. Yeah.' '' Instead, Depp ran as far from formal instruction as he could. ''I just didn't see the character developing with me doing scales in front of a piano and a vocal teacher going, 'No, no — bring it up from the bollocks,' '' he says. ''That kind of thing would have been a disaster. I would still be rehearsing right now. Or I'd have been fired.''"

So. Yeah. I absolutely couldn't agree with you more on EVERYTHING you said. Good movie, good adaptation in general, all of which is ruined by the two main characters blowing.

I agree with you, but Helena being Burton's domestic partner had little to do with her role in the movie. He didn't even get final say over who was being cast. If Sondheim had had a problem with her as Mrs. Lovett, he wouldn't have let them cast her.

THAAAAAAAAAAANK YOU. I'm sick of this "oh, you were expecting the stage show" bullshit. Uh, no, I was expecting something that didn't suck.

And FW is DEAD.

Fine, you didn't like the movie. But I think it's kind of stupid to:
A) blame Depp for how someone else did his makeup. ("OMG he's pale and he's holding a razor, he looks like Edward Scissorhands!1")
B) compare his performance to Jack Sparrow just because of his accent.

To me, the two characters you mentioned have such unique mannerisms that I can't imagine comparing them to Depp's Sweeney. Especially since you clearly have other reasons for not liking the movie already. Why fall back on "LOL Depp always acts like the same person except not"?
